The Living Room

Step Into The Soul 18th Century America

In the Gem at Little Rest, also known as the Baker Greene Home, the Living Room stands as one of the clearest expressions of the home’s eighteenth–century soul. Built in 1788, at a time when America was still defining itself, this room carries forward the architectural language of the era: deliberate, sturdy, and shaped by the belief that a home should endure long after the hands that built it are gone.

Upon entering, one is immediately drawn to the raised-panel fireplace wall, an original feature that remains among the most distinctive in the home. Its deep, hand-worked panels—painted in a historic black—speak to a time when fireplaces were more than ornamental. They were the center of domestic life, the anchor of warmth and conversation, and the heart around which families gathered. The firebox, framed in a bold colonial mustard, reflects the palette of the period, a reminder that early American interiors were often more vivid than we imagine today.

Beneath your feet, the wide-plank floors stretch across the room in long, unbroken lines. Hewn from old-growth timber and worn smooth by generations, these boards bear witness to more than two centuries of footsteps—each one a quiet part of the home’s long story. Their depth of color and texture cannot be replicated; they stand as a testament to the lasting power of materials chosen with care.

Light enters the room through the original, wooden, multi-paned windows, their glass subtly uneven, as is typical of eighteenth-century production. In the morning and late afternoon, the sunlight casts soft patterns across the floor, illuminating the subtle undulations of plaster walls and the hand-forged hardware that continues to hold the windows in place. From these windows, one looks out onto a streetscape that seems unchanged by time: stone walls, mature trees, and a winding road that still curves through the heart of historic Little Rest, now known as Kingston..

The Living Room is spacious, yet intimate—its proportions true to the colonial ideals of symmetry and function. It is a room that has held quiet evenings, lively discussions, and the steady rhythms of daily life for over two hundred years. And even now, it invites that same sense of presence, offering both comfort and continuity.

In this space, the Gem at Little Rest reveals not just its age, but its endurance. The Living Room stands as a reminder that architecture, when guided by purpose and craftsmanship, becomes more than shelter. It becomes history made livable—a place where the past and present meet in the warm glow of a timeless hearth.
