The Two-Car Carriage House

Location

Set behind 18th century stone walls and a closing horse gate, the Two-Car Carriage House stands as both a working structure and a gentle reminder of a time when craftsmanship was measured not by speed, but by care. Its cedar siding, weathered to a soft silver in the morning light, recalls a tradition of building that valued resilience and beauty in equal measure. Above, a new cedar shingle roof, with copper flashing, rises with a humble confidence, each shingle laid by hand, each one promising to endure for decades to come.

Today, the carriage house serves a new generation of needs. Behind the deep red doors, two modern vehicles rest comfortably, sheltered by the same sturdy frame that once might have held a wagon or a team of horses. With poured, modern concrete floors, the bays are wide, clean, and thoughtfully arranged, offering convenience without ever compromising the structure’s historic character.

But it is toward the rear of the building that the story turns, where history gives way to a quiet modern comfort. There, a heated office extends the usefulness of the space, creating a sanctuary for work, reflection, or creative endeavor. A panorama of windows stretches across the back wall, inviting sunlight to spill across the room and offering an uninterrupted view of the surrounding grounds. In every season, the landscape becomes part of the workspace, whether it is the soft greens of spring, the warm gold of autumn, or the stillness of winter’s first snow.

The Two Car Carriage House is more than a place to park or a place to work. It is a testament to thoughtful stewardship, the blending of old and new, and the enduring belief that structures, like stories, are at their best when they are built to last.
